The route leaves the airport through the Bardonnex border crossing and joins the A40, known as the autoroute Blanche, which follows the Arve valley through Bonneville and Cluses. After Le Fayet the road climbs the Egratz viaduct, one of the most spectacular in France, before entering the Chamonix valley at Les Houches. No passes, no tunnels: roughly 80 of the 88 kilometres are motorway.
Allow 1h15 in normal conditions. On changeover Saturdays from January to March the Sallanches to Chamonix section builds up in the late morning and mid-afternoon, so plan for 1h45 to 2 hours. Your flight number is tracked and the driver adjusts the pick-up to the actual landing time.
88 km and 1h15 from Geneva, against roughly 220 km and 2h30 from Lyon. Geneva is not only faster, it is also considerably cheaper on this route — and it takes the vast majority of UK flights into the region.
Winter tyres compliant with the French Loi Montagne II from 1 November to 31 March, chains carried on board. The valley road stays open all season, but the climbs to Argentière and Le Tour can need chains after heavy snow — fitting them is included.
Chamonix draws as many climbers as skiers. Ice axes, ropes, technical packs, touring skis and splitboards are all carried. Tell us the volume when you book: four fully kitted freeriders get a van rather than a saloon.

For four travellers on a weekday, the saloon works out at roughly €41 each for a direct journey with drop-off at your accommodation. On busy Saturdays from January to March, allow up to 2 hours.

The head of the valley towards the Swiss border, Balme and La Poya ski areas. Quieter and sunnier, popular with families. Allow 15 to 20 minutes more from Chamonix centre.
